Get out of the tourist-packed city center and experience the real Thailand!

Our overnight tours take you on foot through the jungles of the mountains and hills of Chiang Mai to meet local hill tribes and stay in their remote jungle village overnight. Experience their authentic off-grid life-style. Let the white-noise of the jungle and its clean air give you the best sleep you’ve had in years. In the morning, get ready for an unforgettable bamboo rafting experience before meeting local elephants. Your visit will enrich you with a taste of Karen life that hasn’t changed in centuries, and the revenue will go straight back into supporting the Karen community.

08:00-08.30 am Pick up at your hotel. After a one-hour drive to the local market in the north of Chiang Mai (Mae Teang district), you will have time to buy everything you might need for your trip (e.g. toilet paper, mosquito repellant). After that we will drive to the Mok fa waterfall, where you will have time to swim or relax while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
12:15 am Lunch at local restaurant.
01:00 pm From there we will start our 3-4 hour trekking tour into the jungle. Your guide will provide you with information about the plants, animals, and villages surrounding you and will answer any questions you may have about Thailand or the local way of life. At the top of the mountain you will enjoy an incredible view of the jungle and the mountains.
05:00 pm Arrival at a Karen Village, where you will meet your host family, who will prepare a delicious meal for you. After dinner you can enjoy your evening around a fire.

09:00 am In the morning a nice breakfast awaits you before the one-hour trek to a local elephant park.
10:30 am Board a bamboo raft for the two-hour ride down the Mea Teang river to a Shan village.
12:30 am In the village the locals will have lunch prepare for you.
14:30 pm You will have a chance to interact with the elephants, feeding them, playing with them, and bathing them in the river (no riding!). When finished we will return to Chiang Mai (two hours) and bring you to your hotel around 4-5 pm.

**On our bamboo raft, we have a sturdy tripod to hang our bags. We also provide a waterproof bag, for your convenience, to protect your clothes and valuable items.

** The river rafting on special made bamboo rafts through the jungle is an exciting adventure. A combination of calm slow floating water and more wild white water. Possible to swim next to the raft if weather permit.

**We have two treks available. Our first trek is easy and suitable for all the family. Our second options is for the more adventurous who want a moderately challenging trek.

  • You must have sensible hiking shoes for the trek.
  • Recommend slippers or sandals for the bamboo raft and village stay.
  • Backpack
  • Pullover (it can get cold in the village)
  • T-Shirt(s)
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Short and long pants
  • Sunscreen
  • Raincoat (especially during the monsoon season in June – October)
  • Flashlight
  • Mosquito Repellent
  • Toilet Paper
  • Personal Medicine
  • Soap, Shampoo, Toothbrush

-I would recommend the following items to bring with you on our trek: toilet paper, towels, flip flop or sandals, appropriate shoes for hiking (you can not rely on sandals/flip-flops for the hike), mosquitoes spray, jacket (it gets cold in the evening), flashlight, swimming suit.

-In the village, there is no electricity and the toilet is an outhouse.

-I would recommend bringing long trousers for the evening time in the village. However, you can wear shorts for the hike.

-In the village you have the opportunity to buy beer, water and Coca Cola. There is also shower facilities, but no a hot water – a traditional village style wash!

-In the room, for your bed, we provide a mattress, blankets, pillows and mosquito net.

-Please only bring what you need as you have to carry your items – I would suggest that you leave the non-essential items in your hotel or in the car.

-You can bring your camera, phone and other electronic equipment – during the traditional bamboo rafting, we have a waterproof bag for your convenience. We also can provide life jackets if you feel more comfortable with this.

The only items you will need to pay for are extra food and drinks. In the local villages there is no electricity and no hot water.

What Mike’s Authentic Trekking provides:

-In both villages we will provide you with specially constructed accommodations, blankets, pillows, mosquito nets, basic toilets, and entry fees for all of the activities listed above.

-In the village we do not have electricity and therefore you will not be able to charge your phone. I recommend that you fully charge your phone before going on the trip and bring a power bank.
